NAJIO SERIES
In a small town called Najio, nestled in the valleys of northern Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, there has been a continuous tradition of making Japanese paper since the Edo period. The distinctive feature of Najio Washi is the technique of mixing locally sourced clay with gampi fibers in the papermaking process. The inclusion of clay makes the paper resistant to stains and prevents discoloration when exposed to sunlight, making it highly valued for use in high-end fusuma (sliding door) panels and folding screens.
Even today, despite the reduced demand for washi, Tani Toku Paper Mill continues to produce this traditional paper using time-honored methods.
The NAJIO SERIES is a collection of furniture pieces that incorporate this durable Najio Washi as a surface material. The furniture is constructed in a box-like shape, with the paper adhered using starch glue and finished with shellac varnish. The varnishing process employs a technique known as French polish. As layers of thin shellac are applied, the fibers and varying shades of the clay in the paper become visible, similar to how paper appears translucent when wet.
NAJIO-002 - PILLAR STOOL is designed to function both as a stool and as a coffee table. The paper used is Najio gampi paper, which contains white clay. Through the application of French polish, the unevenness of the clay becomes visible, creating a unique texture. The stool is composed of three interlocking boxes: one serves as the pillar, another as the base, and the third as the seat. The pillar can act as a handrest when standing or sitting, a place to set a coffee cup, or even a bookend. With the addition of this pillar, the user is invited to explore different ways to interact with the piece, encouraging creativity and personal comfort.
